I’m 17, I do online shopping/selling on eBay, should I get a checking or savings account?
I’m 17 and I’ve been doing a lot of selling and buying on eBay using Visa Gift Cards. My mom said she’d get me a bank account to make things easier. Should I get a checking or savings account?
Checking.
Savings accounts only offer an ATM card.
And savings have limits on how many times you can withdraw cash.
Checking is the way to go.
You’ll have to go with your mom to the bank and get something called a custodial free checking account.
Both your names will be on the accounts and the checks that you will get for free.
Within 10 days of opening the account, you will receive a debit card in the mail with your name on it.
You will not receive your pin number on the same day as the debit card – this is a law.
Be careful about using more money than what you have in the account.
Overdraft fees are steep – so keep a check register in excell.
Enjoy having a checking account – a debit card is fun to use – but be careful about overdrafting.
Another easier option is to ask your mom to make you an Authorized user on one of the credit cards she does not use.
You will receive a credit card in the mail with your name on it in 10 days.
Credit cards offer GREAT fraud online protection that checking accounts DO NOT offer.
Credit cards are the way to go for buying online.
They will offer you 100% protection – banks offer practically none.
