Shopping Spree With Spreadsheets
You were robbed! Now What?
In a daze you call the police and go through all the necessary details. You find out that there is a break in spree going through your neighbourhood and you just fell prey to it.
Dealing with the insurance company you are made to realize that you should have kept better inventory records. They want to know the titles of your DVD’s and books and where are the photos of the computer and lawnmower. You never took any precautions; never recorded any serial numbers and now you are left hoping that the insurance company will cover the costs.
If you have found yourself in this situation, as unfortunate as it maybe, you learn a good number of lessons from it. Mainly keeping track of your household inventory should have been a top priority.
There are several ways to record inventory. One of the easy ways is to download a spreadsheet and just record your entire inventory. Including what was in your kitchen cupboards. Get your camera out and take photos of everything. Your plates, the TV, stereo, computer, kid’s bikes and your appliances, even your home phone. Make a list of your jewellery and any heirlooms you might own.
Get into the habit of each time you make a new purchase, photograph it and record it into your data base. So if there ever is another time you will be well prepared for it.
Depending on what type of insurance you have you will want to keep receipts and values of your household items. This way there will be no issues from your insurance company. Your claim will be processed in a timely fashion and you will have your new items back in your home.
When going shopping for replacement items be aware that some companies have their own suppliers and may wish to replace the items directly, especially if they have the same make and model available, though this can sometimes be negotiated.
It may take a few hours to record your household inventory but it is a very valuable and useful task once completed.
