What is the best and most economical way to advertise a new website?

Late last year I set up a new giftware online store. I knew nothing about creating websites and shopping carts but have learned so much in the process and loved it. I have several categories in my store: one is for men who need help shopping for the women in their lives with a gift reminder register and free giftwrapping, another is focusing on children’s time teacher watches, also other categories like handbags/makeup bags and also baby/new mum. I registered with some online directories which list your website for free but now I feel like I need to go into some sort of paid advertising because I’m still not getting much traffic or sales. I also have 3 googlead campaigns going at the moment. Can anyone tell me what is the most cost affective way to advertise a website and it’s products. Here’s what I did. Go to a website that will allow you to create a free banner like http://www.addesigner.com/ (I’ve used it and it’s really good). Then go to a good banner exchange program like this one http://www.thebannerexchange.net/signup….
You can upload your banner to their website and simply place a snippet of their code onto your website and voila, you will have a banner exchange! That means that they will place your advertisement on some other peoples websites and you will place someone elses on yours. It worked for me and it doesn’t take long to do. Hope that helps!
